'Basic error' leads to women losing 3 fingers in accident at work

A St Helens napkin and tablecloth manufacturer has been fined £30,000 after a woman lost three fingers in an accident at work.

Forty-three-year-old mother-of-three Cheryl Bridge was cleaning printer rollers while they were still operating when her hand was pulled in.

She suffered serious injuries to her right hand that resulted in her little finger being cut off, and her first and third fingers being severed below the second joint.

Emboss (Europe) Ltd was prosecuted after a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed a guard designed to protect workers was not used.

It also found that the printers were almost always cleaned while still moving, instead of being halted.

John McGrellis, HSE principal inspector, said:"This was a basic error that has ultimately led to a worker suffering terrible injuries to her right hand, which could and should have been prevented."

Manufacturing remains one of the most dangerous industries in the UK, with around 4,000 people seriously hurt last year.

The sector accounts for nine per cent of the total British workforce and 16 per cent of reportable accidents.
