Older drivers avoid traffic accident peak hoursRSS Feed
Older drivers are safer than younger motorists, as they manage to avoid being on the roads at the peak traffic accident times, it is claimed.
According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), older drivers are putting their experience to good use by planning when they travel.
It comes as over-60s in Leicestershire are being encouraged to take part in a driving skills course run by the local council.
Peter Rodger, chief driving examiner at the IAM, believes older drivers tend to be safer than younger road users, potentially making them less likely to launch an accident claim.
"They tend to regulate their journeys so they do the journey when it suits them," he explained.
He added: "They don't tend to travel during the rush hours or late at night, which are the peak casualty times."
However, Mr Rodger did concede that older motorists are "over-represented in crashes" at junctions on high-speed roads or where the junction is complicated.
