In-car entertainment may reduce summertime accident claimsRSS Feed
Portable games consoles and DVD players can help to reduce accident claims during the school holidays.
These devices can keep children occupied for hours and minimise the risk of a traffic accident caused by their distracting behaviour, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
Simon Elstow, driver training specialist at IAM Drive and Survive, explains: "Kids can be noisy, disruptive and distracting, especially if they get bored.
"The trick is to keep them occupied as much as possible and to keep your attention on the road."
Other top tips from the expert include packing plenty of food and drink for a long journey, taking extra stops along the way, and always have a plastic bag for travel sickness.
In addition, motorists are warned not to turn round to deal with squabbling kids, as this is less safe than finding somewhere to pull over.
Last week, road safety charity Brake advised drivers to slow down in residential areas over the summer as there could be more children playing in the streets.
