Slow drivers are among the biggest frustrations on the road and are directly leading to accident claims.
Nearly half of drivers in the UK have risked a traffic accident by attempting an unsafe overtaking manoeuvre to pass a slow driver.
The research from Confused.com shows that nearly a third of motorists have had an incident or near miss on the roads caused by a slow driver
Department for Transport figures show that as many as 143 accidents a year are caused directly by slow driving.
Gareth Kloet, head of car insurance at the price comparison site, said: "Slow drivers need to be taken as seriously as motorists caught speeding.
"Findings confirm they are a constant source of anxiety on UK roads and responsible for a large amount of accidents each year."
Half the motorists surveyed backed the idea of a slow speed camera to catch people dawdling on the roads.
It comes as the road safety charity Brake calls on drivers to slow down in residential areas during the school holidays.
