Drivers urged to slow down to prevent holiday accident claimsRSS Feed
Drivers need to slow down in built-up areas over the summer holidays to reduce accident claims, a charity has said.
Brake has warned that with children more present over the holidays, the risk of a traffic accident is greater.
The charity is urging motorists to drive at 20mph or lower in residential neighbourhoods to reduce the chances of hitting a child.
It follows research by Brake, which revealed that 91 per cent of people would like drivers to drive more slowly and carefully in their neighbourhood for the sake of vulnerable road users.
Three-quarters think more should be done to slow down traffic around schools and community facilities.
Julie Townsend, campaigns director of Brake, said: "We all want to live in safe communities where everyone is able to get out and about.
"Unfortunately many children can't do this without having to negotiate streets plagued by fast traffic that poses a serious risk to their safety."
It comes after the charity warned drivers to make sure they are well rested after a survey found one in eight motorists had nodded off behind the wheel in the last year.
