Tiredness 'can lead to traffic accident'RSS Feed
Motorists need to be very wary of feeling tired when driving as they may not be able to react quickly enough if a traffic accident occurs ahead.
"If you're alert and 400m down the road you can see brake lights on in the distance, you can start to react, but if you're dropping off you might not see it at that distance," explains Sandra Dodson, deputy chief examiner at the Driving Standards Agency.
It comes after a recent survey revealed that one in eight motorists had risked an accident claim in the last year by nodding off at the wheel.
The research from the road safety charity Brake also showed that few people follow best practice advice if they start to feel sleepy while driving.
Ms Dodson notes that while not everyone can take a nap if they feel tired, just stopping and getting out of the car be rejuvenating.
She also suggests driving with a window open and not allowing the vehicle to get too hot.
Another piece of advice from Ms Dodson is not to eat too much before starting a trip, but keeping sugary snacks at the ready.
