'Talking' cars can reduce traffic accident pile-upsRSS Feed
"Talking" cars that communicate with each other on the road could reduce the number of accident claims caused by motorway pile-ups.
Scientists from the University of Bologna have developed a system that tells cars what is going on miles ahead.
Studies show it could reduce the number of cars involved in pile-ups by up to 40 per cent when a traffic accident occurs on a motorway.
Road tests on the technology will be carried out in Los Angeles later this year in conjunction with carmaker Toyota.
When a traffic accident occurs, the car would learn about it in a fraction of a second from vehicles further ahead.
Project leader professor Marco Roccetti said: "Our app allows cars to stay in constant contact with each other.
"They read each other. They know the direction and speed that all the other cars are travelling, and they also know their transmitting capacity."
It comes as British police forces are to be issued with new laser technology designed to reduce the length of delays caused by motorway accidents.
