Sleepy motorists risk accident claims by nodding off

Motorists are risking accident claims because they are falling asleep when driving, a charity is warning today (July 13th).

Research from Brake shows one in eight drivers has "head-nodded" while behind the wheel.

Head-nodding is when someone drifts off for between two and 30 seconds, sometimes without realising they have done so.

Brake notes that it takes just a few seconds of sleep while driving to cause a traffic accident.

The survey also found that one in four motorists has started a journey while already feeling drowsy.

Julie Townsend, Brake campaigns director, said: "Tiredness at the wheel kills. Driving a vehicle is a huge responsibility that must be taken seriously.

"That means stopping when we feel drowsy and certainly never starting a journey tired."

Brake's research also shows that most people (86 per cent) do not follow best practice advice for dealing with tiredness, which is to stop somewhere safe for a nap.

Earlier this month, the charity revealed that one in 60 young male drivers will experience a traffic accident involving the death or injury of themselves, a passenger or another road user.
