Traffic accident figures 'down to effective safety strategy'RSS Feed
New figures showing a reduction in road traffic accident deaths are the result of an effective safety strategy, a leading charity has claimed.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) says the fall in fatalities comes from strong government leadership and the joint working of the road safety community
Department for Transport figures show 1,857 people were reported killed in road accidents in 2010, a 16 per cent fall on the previous year.
There was also a drop in the number of people injured in car and motorcycle accidents.
RoSPA head of road safety Kevin Clinton said: "There is no doubt that Britain's world-leading strategic approach to road safety has provided the context for continuous casualty reduction for several decades."
However, there may have been more accident claims from cyclists, as the data reveals a slight increase in fatalities and injuries among this group of road users.
Mr Clinton said this was "disappointing" and called for better road designs to make cycling safer and improved training for both motorists and cyclists.
