Road traffic accident deaths fallRSS Feed
Road traffic accident deaths have declined in the last year by nearly a fifth, new Department for Transport figures show.
The number of people killed on the UK's roads in 2010 was 1,857, down 16 per cent from the previous year.
Total numbers for those killed and seriously injured fell to 22,660 – down eight per cent.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said close working between government, local authorities, enforcement agencies and education bodies is saving lives.
He argued that the next step is to encourage more people to go on post-test driver training to reduce accident claims.
"Every individual motorist has to take responsibility for their own road risk, whether that means improving their driving through further training, or simply by taking a bit more care," Mr Greig added.
It follows claims that new laws forcing people to have insurance for their vehicles at all times will save lives.
Continuous Insurance Enforcement will reduce the number of road traffic accident deaths, according to executive director at the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety Robert Gifford.
