Keep calm to avoid accident claims

Stay calm and concentrate on the situation - two ways to remain safe in an emergency and avoid accident claims.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued advice to motorists on ways to steer clear of a traffic accident when an emergency vehicle is approaching.

IAM head of training Simon Elstow said: "Sirens and flashing lights cause many motorists to panic, mainly because drivers are not routinely taught how to respond to them."

Drivers are reminded not to panic when they hear a siren, as stopping in the wrong place can simply snarl up traffic and block the ambulance or police car.

The IAM also says motorists should remain legal and not go through red lights unless requested to do so by a police officer.

"The trick is to behave calmly, legally, safely and predictably and move out of the way as soon as it is safe to do so," add Mr Elstow.

It comes after the IAM reported on the distrust for speed cameras among Britain's motorists.

Less than a third (29 per cent) of UK drivers think that speed cameras are only used at sites with a bad record of crashes and injuries, it was found.
