Worcestershire firms prosecuted for accident at workRSS Feed
Two Worcestershire firms have been fined after a man suffered serious injuries to his hand in an accident at work.
The worker, who did not wish to be named, was an employee of Non-Flam (Sawdust) Co Ltd at the time and was instructed to work for KSR (UK) Ltd.
He was operating a carding machine when the accident at work occurred. This forces polypropylene fibres into a nylon sock to absorb chemical and oil spills.
When the employee reached in to remove fibres that had become trapped in the teeth of the machine, his right hand became trapped between the two rotating blades, severing his thumb, index finger and most of his middle finger.
Both companies were fined after pleading guilty to health and safety breaches that led to the accident.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Ritchie McCrae said: "The dangers of using machines without suitable guarding are well known and long established. Specifically, guidance on the use of carding machines has been available for many years.
"Yet neither company identified this machine as hazardous and continued to allow employees to operate it."
