Brits risk accident claims abroad by not knowing local rulesRSS Feed
British drivers and motorcyclists could be risking accident claims abroad because they do not know the local laws.
Over half (53 per cent) of motorists from the UK were unaware that some European countries require them to have a high visibility jacket in the car at all times, a survey from Confused.com found.
A third (31 per cent) did not realise that in some countries they should carry a warning triangle, which is used in the event of a breakdown or traffic accident.
Meanwhile, a quarter (23 per cent) were unaware they should have a GB sticker, while just under half (47 per cent) did not know that an international driving permit is required in some countries.
Gareth Kloet, head of car insurance at Confused.com, said: "Taking your car on holiday can be very liberating and if you're equipped for the trip then you'll feel more confident and avoid getting into trouble.
"Then it's just a case of remembering to drive on the right in the majority of European countries."
