Drivers risk accident claims by not indicating

A third of motorists could be risking accident claims because they are not indicating at junctions.

This is one of the findings of a study of driver behaviour from the AA, which is said to be the biggest of its kind in the UK.

Logging the actions of 40,000 vehicles, the survey revealed that almost five per cent of drivers are not wearing their seat belt and would have been thrown through the windscreen if they had to make an emergency stop.

If a driver did cause a traffic accident by running into the back of another car, it may not be their fault, as 3.6 per cent of vehicles had faulty brake lights.

One in ten drivers appeared to be going too fast, while just 0.23 per cent were seen using their mobile phones.

AA president Edmund King explained that the five per cent who do not wear seatbelts contribute to 30 per cent of road deaths.

"Many of those un-belted were taxi and van drivers who should be aware that they are potentially more at risk due to their higher mileage," he added.

"It is of great concern that five per cent of drivers are still haven't got the 'clunck click every trip' message."
