Glass company fined after Bristol accident at workRSS Feed
A glass firm has been fined £20,000 after two employees were injured in an accident at work at its Bristol site.
The employees were hurt when a trolley load of glass panes fell on them at Pilkington UK's Imperial Park site, Bristol Magistrates' Court heard.
Prosecutors for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) told the court that the 1,500kg capacity trolley had been overloaded with glass weighing 1,780kg by two of the injured men's colleagues.
Ashley Emes suffered a broken bone in his leg and needed 72 stitches in his neck. He is yet to return to work despite a number of operations.
Nick Stone suffered severe cuts, bruising and tendon damage, only returning to work six months after the incident in 2010.
HSE inspector Mehtaab Hamid said: "This horrific incident could have been avoided if Pilkington had a system in place to ensure its staff knew the loading capacity of the trolley, the weight of the loads being put on it, and how to load it correctly."
According to the HSE's Labour Force Study, 233,000 reportable injuries occurred in the UK in 2009/10.
