Businesses 'should hire consultants' to avoid accident claims

Businesses may be able to reduce accident claims by hiring health and safety consultants.

In a move that may cut the accident at work rate, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) claims professionals can help companies reduce risks.

Roger Bibbings, occupational safety adviser at the charity, explained that "outside help" can help businesses deal with complex areas.

"They may choose to use consultants as independent advisers to help with investigations, reviews or audits, or to help develop training programmes and so on," he said.

When it comes to a health and safety action, however, "employers need to own their systems and procedures" rather than contracting out their management of the issue, Mr Bibbings advised.

His comments come after the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) revealed that 47 per cent of businesses find health and safety regulations a burden.

The BCC said regulation should be tailored to the risk-level of the workplace, noting that low-risk businesses are often treated in the same manner as high-risk firms.
