Cambridgeshire firm fined for accident at workRSS Feed
A Cambridgeshire packaging firm has been fined after an employee's arm was crushed in an accident at work.
John Armstrong from Pidley suffered broken bones when his arm was dragged into a machine at Huntingdon-based Firstan Limited.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) told Huntingdon Magistrates' Court that the company had not put in place measures to prevent employees accessing dangerous parts of machinery.
HSE inspector Stephen Faulkner explained that the accident at work resulted from "in-running nips" - rotating parts of machinery that may be in contact, producing a "nip" point.
"This danger is common on machines with intermeshing gears and rolling mills," he said.
"Employers using heavy machinery should take heed that suitable information, training and supervision should be given to all staff using such machinery."
Firstran was fined £5,000 after pleading guilty to breaching laws designed to prevent accident claims.
