Male drivers may be risking accident claims with stress levelsRSS Feed
Men could be risking accident claims every time they get behind the wheel because they are letting their stress levels get out of control.
New research shows that the average man's stress levels soar seven times higher than a woman's when stuck in traffic.
The study, which was carried out by TomTom, found stress chemicals in women's saliva rose by 8.7 per cent, compared to a 60 per cent increase in men.
Two-thirds of the women (67 per cent) and half of the men reported not feeling any stress after 20 minutes in heavy traffic, despite the evidence.
It could make their driving erratic and potentially lead to a traffic accident, said health psychologist David Moxon.
"These findings make good evolutionary sense. Men, in particular, show a strong acute physiological fight or flight response," he added.
It comes after the government announced plans to roll out new laser technology to cut gridlock times following a traffic or motorcycle accident on motorways.
The lasers allow police to take measurements in minutes, saving time compared to traditional tape measures.
