Do older drivers cause more accident claims?RSS Feed
Older drivers could be making more accident claims, as new research shows even adults with a safe driving record are prone to making potentially dangerous mistakes.
The study from the American Psychological Association focused on older drivers who showed no signs of dementia, lived on their own and drove once a week.
It could have implications for driving tests and training for older drivers, along with the design of roads, signs and vehicles, the researchers said.
However, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has suggested that far from being at greater risk of a traffic accident, older drivers are in fact much safer.
Peter Rodger, chief examiner of the IAM, explained: "Older drivers are safer than any other age group, so the perception that they are unsafe is inaccurate.
"They do typically adjust their driving behaviour to match the changes in their lifestyle, and the changes in the needs of their lifestyle."
He did note, however, that older drivers often struggle with junctions on high-speed roads.
