Driver 'mood' affects traffic accident riskRSS Feed
How people are feeling when they get behind the wheel could be a major influence on the number of accident claims.
A person's mood is a big factor in how well they conduct themselves on the roads, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
Peter Rodger, chief examiner at the organisation, explained: "Any state of mind will influence how well, or how badly, you drive. Your mood will influence how you behave and driving is a form of behaviour."
If someone is in an extreme emotional state, they ought to take a few minutes to settle down to avoid a potential traffic accident, he added.
His comments come as a new study by Queensland University of Technology suggests young drivers who experience anxiety and depression are more likely to take risks on the road.
Mr Rodger noted that for young drivers, passing their test and being able to get behind the wheel is not the end of the road as there is still "masses more to learn".
"You should always consider further training on a lifelong, ongoing basis," he said.
