Laser technology to cut traffic accident delaysRSS Feed
Traffic accident delays on motorways are to be slashed thanks to new laser technology, the government has confirmed.
Ministers have agreed to spend £3 million on devices that will be issued to police around the country.
The lasers will allow police officers to take measurements at the scene of a car or motorcycle accident in a fraction of the time it takes to use a tape measure.
Motorway delays are estimated to cost the UK economy around £1 billion a year, ministers said.
Roads minister Mike Penning described this as an "unacceptable brake" on the UK's economic recovery.
"There is nothing more frustrating than being stuck in a traffic jam for hours on end," he said.
"But even worse than that is the shocking £1 billion cost of those lost hours for our economy."
It comes after the government launched a range of new measures to cut road traffic accidents, including on-the-spot fines for careless driving.
