Cardiff firm fined after accident at work leaves man's hand disfiguredRSS Feed
A Cardiff firm has been fined after an employee suffered serious burns to his hand in an accident at work.
Cardiff Crown Court heard how the 41-year-old man was working as a production operator at Celsa Manufacturing's city centre plant when the incident occurred in 2009.
He was using large steel callipers to measure the size of solid hot steel stock passing the plant's section mill, when his hand was caught in the rollers of the machinery.
The man, from the Newport area, suffered severe burns to his right hand and lost two fingers in the accident at work.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed the system of work at the firm was not safe enough.
Celsa Manufacturing was fined £50,000 after it pleaded guilty to breaching safety regulations.
HSE inspector Steve Curry said: "Had Celsa ensured correct and safe working practices, the serious injuries suffered by this employee may have been avoided."
It comes as the HSE embarks on a two-week safety tour of construction sites in the north-west of England.
