Safety tour targets accident at work rate in north-westRSS Feed
A safety tour targeting construction workers in the north-west could help reduce accident claims.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is conducting a two-week tour of colleges and construction sites in the region to reduce the accident at work rate.
Preventing workplace falls is the focus this year, after six workers were killed in the area in 2009/10 through this type of incident.
Other topics include power tool vibration injuries, asbestos and other dust-related health issues.
Construction industry experts and HSE specialists will be visiting a total of seven building sites and two colleges in the north-west.
Polly Tomlinson, HSE principal inspector for construction, is hopeful that the tour will lead to a reduction in accidents in the industry.
"The latest figures show that 545 workers in the north-west suffered major injuries as a result of falls last year," she added.
"We'll also be highlighting the dangers of prolonged use of power tools, and dusts including asbestos."
It follows a series of inspections across the UK construction industry that revealed many sites were unsafe for workers.
