Reckless drivers face spot fines in new traffic accident reduction approachRSS Feed
Motorists who tailgate, undertake or cut up other drivers are to be fined on the spot under plans to reduce the UK traffic accident rate.
Police will be given new powers to issue on-the-spot fines of between £80 and £100 for careless driving rather than going to court.
Transport secretary Philip Hammond said the government was not trying to victimise ordinary motorists who made the odd mistake, but persistently dangerous drivers.
Announcing the plans, he said: "We need to rebalance road safety enforcement away from a narrow focus on camera-enforced speed policing, to address the wider range of behaviours that create risk on the roads."
The proposals also contain measures to toughen up on drink and drug driving to reduce accident claims from victims.
Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, questioned whether the new rules would be enforceable.
He said: "With police services being cut, it is far from certain the desired results can be achieved."
