HSE unveils new accident at work reporting systemRSS Feed
A new system for reporting an accident at work will take effect from September 12th, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed.
Under the plans, the majority of workplace accidents covered by RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) will be reported online.
However, businesses will still be able to notify the authorities of major or fatal incidents, which could lead to an accident claim, by phone.
HSE director of strategy Trevor Carlile explained that over the last seven years, there has been a steady increase in the number of incidents being reported through the website instead of by phone.
Using the internet more will allow the HSE to be "more efficient in the way it works", he said.
Mr Carlile added: "People reporting a traumatic event still need that personal interaction so the notification of fatal and major incidents and injuries will still take place by phone."
A consultation on planned changes to RIDDOR came to end this week (May 9th).
The proposals included a provision to increase the threshold for reporting workplace injuries from three days to seven.
According to the HSE this would ensure that someone suffering a reportable injury has received a proper medical assessment.
