Oldham firm for risking accident claimsRSS Feed
An Oldham firm has been fined £10,000 after it risked accident claims by ignoring workers' safety.
Townfield Manufacturing Co Ltd was prosecuted after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) uncovered a series of failings that could have led to an accident at work.
Inspectors found cracked socket casings, exposed conductors and live electrical wires at its Mount Pleasant Street premises.
After issuing warnings to the firm, the HSE found during a subsequent visit that it had failed to implement its recommendations.
HSE inspector Sarah Taylor said the employees at the company were at serious risk of injury or death.
"The temperature of the factory was also a serious issue," she added.
"It is simply not acceptable to expect staff to work in conditions so cold that you can see your breath in the air."
There are about 1,000 electrical accidents at work reported to the HSE each year and about 25 people die of their injuries.
