Accident at work sees Herts electrical company finedRSS Feed
An accident at work that left a man paralysed has resulted in a £120,000 fine for the firm responsible.
Lewes Crown Court heard how the man, who does not wish to be named, was severely injured when he was knocked from a scissor lift while working for Skanska Rashleigh Weatherfoil in Crawley in 2007.
The man, from Hartlepool, was tying cables into overhead trays when they collapsed, causing him to fall eight metres to the floor below.
He suffered serious spinal injuries and is now paralysed from the waist down.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found the company had failed to do enough to prevent accident claims from workers by protecting their safety.
HSE inspector Denis Bodger commented: "The fine reflects the seriousness of the omissions by this company.
"Skanska Rashleigh Weatherfoil Ltd employed people to do highly hazardous work and yet failed to take the appropriate steps to ensure their safety."
It comes after a father and daughter who own and run Ugley Hall Farm near Bishop's Stortford, also in Herts, were fined after a worker suffered a fall from height.
