Herts farmers fined after accident at workRSS Feed
The owners of a Hertfordshire farm have been fined after an accident at work in which an employee fell through a barn roof.
At Harlow Magistrates' Court, father and daughter James and Elizabeth Reay were each fined £4,000, following the incident last year.
On August 6th 2010, 39-year-old Stefan Wasilewski was cleaning the roof of a barn at Ugley Hall Farm near Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire.
The asbestos cement roof cracked and the worker fell five metres to the concrete floor, suffering multiple fractures to his pelvis and ribs.
Kim Wicks, an inspector with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), explained that working at height requires safety precautions to be put in place.
She said the incident could have been avoided if standards for working on fragile roofs had been followed.
"Falls from height are among the biggest causes of workplace deaths in the UK and the outcome of this incident could have been even more serious," she added.
According to the HSE, more than 4,000 workers suffered serious injuries as a result of falls from height last year.
