Drivers urged to check tyres to avoid accident claimsRSS Feed
Drivers are being encouraged to check their tyres to avoid potential accident claims.
According to new research, one in four motorists is risking a traffic accident by allowing tyres to get below the legal tread depth.
Over half (54 per cent) of drivers say they would not change their tyres until they fell below the regulation depth, the survey from mytyres.co.uk shows.
In addition, over a third (38 per cent) would be happy to drive on tyres with significant damage, such as sidewall bulges and cracks.
A spokesman for the company behind the survey explained that tyres are among the most important components of a vehicle.
The UK legal minimum tyre depth is 1.6mm, though they can be changed before this for added safety.
"Failure to comply with the law means that a driver could face a £2,500 fine and three penalty points on their licence," the spokesman added.
Last month, TyreSafe encouraged bikers to avoid a motorcycle accident by making sure their tyres were in good working order.
