Motorcycle helmet ratings approvedRSS Feed
A new list of approved helmets that can reduce the risk of death or serious brain injury in the event of a motorcycle accident has been published by the government.
The Department for Transport announced over 20 new additions to its Safety Helmet Assessment and Ratings Programme (SHARP), taking the total number of rated helmets to 247.
According to the ratings scale, the safety performance of helmets can vary by as much as 70 per cent.
Although all helmets meet a minimum level of safety, the SHARP tests cover a wider range of tests to provide bikers with more information.
Road safety minister Mike Penning noted that many motorcyclists will be headed out on the roads over the bank holiday period.
He urged anyone thinking about buying a new helmet ahead of the weekend to check out the SHARP website before making their decision.
"A well fitted helmet with a high SHARP rating will provide you with the best possible protection in the event of an accident so it's well worth checking the advice on the site before you buy," he added.
