Nestle Purina employees suffer burns in accident at workRSS Feed
Five employees of petcare giant Nestle Purina suffered severe burns during an accident at work, a court heard.
Cambridge Crown Court was told how the five men were scalded when a steam pressure system malfunctioned at the firm's plant in Wisbech.
Gary Coe, David Garner, Mark Mawby, Christopher Newell, and David Naylor suffered severe burns to their faces, arms and hands during the incident in 2006.
An investigation carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that the hydrostat control systems had been replaced, but no proper assessment of the risks associated with these modifications was undertaken.
Nestle Purina was fined £50,000 after pleading guilty to breaching health and safety regulations.
Commenting on the case, HSE inspector Peter Burns said: "There are strict rules and regulations around the modifications and repairs of high pressure systems that are in place to protect workers operating or maintaining these machines."
Had the firm followed these regulations, the incident may not have happened at all, he added.
It follows the prosecution of Enviro-Strip (UK) Ltd after a worker suffered burns at its premises in Wilnecote.
