Traffic accident claim met with 200-page replyRSS Feed
A driver has been left stunned after a minor traffic accident led to a 200-page letter from his local authority.
Terry Rothery, 65, wrote to Essex County Council after his car went over a large pothole in an attempt to seek compensation, the Daily Gazette reports.
To his surprise, he received a 16-page rejection letter refuting responsibility for his accident claim, accompanied by the council's 186-page road maintenance strategy in its entirety.
"The rejection letter was a load of gobbledygook, with clauses, subclauses and explanations, which basically said they could not be held responsible," he told the newspaper.
He added: "There were so many pages there that it cost about £2 to send it out to me."
The council has since said that the highways maintenance policy was sent in error and apologised to Mr Rothery.
According to campaign group potholes.co.uk, local authorities currently pay out more than £50 million every year in accident claims due to poor roads.
