Accident at work caused lost hand for teenagerRSS Feed
A teenager from Belfast who suffered a serious accident at work has spoken of the devastating impact the incident has had on his life.
Conor Fitzsimmons was employed at James Glennon Packaging for just one week before he lost his hand in a printing machine, BBC News reports.
After trying to free a bag that had become stuck, his hand became trapped in the rollers because the machine had no guard fitted, leading to the amputation of his hand.
Since the accident at work he has been unable to tie his shoelaces, put his own socks on or play football because of problems with his balance.
The company has since been fined £12,000 after admitting to four breaches of health and safety regulations.
Last month, a printing company in Tunbridge Wells was fined after deliberately removing safety guards from its machines, putting workers at risk of suffering an injury like Mr Fitzsimmons'.
