Drivers 'overconfident' about drink drive accident claim riskRSS Feed
Motorists are becoming overconfident about the risks of a drink drive accident claim being made against them, new figures indicate.
The latest Home Office statistics reveal just two per cent of drivers performed a drink drive breath test in 2009.
According to road safety charity Brake, motorists are becoming aware that there is a lower chance of being caught now than in previous years.
It discovered that more than half of drivers (53 per cent) think there is less than a one in four chance of being caught if they were to drive while over the limit.
Meanwhile, nearly a third (31 per cent) thinks there is less than a one in ten chance of being caught.
Brake notes that one in six road traffic accident deaths are caused by drink drivers.
The charity wants to see random tests brought in as well as a lowering of the drink drive limit to 20mg alcohol per 100ml blood.
Julie Townsend, Brake campaigns director, said: "The number of breath tests being carried out is wholly inadequate in providing an effective deterrent and tackling the appalling number of casualties that continue to result from drink driving."
