MOT tests to move to every 2 years despite accident claimRSS Feed
MOT tests could happen every two years instead of annually, despite a potential rise in accident claims, under new proposals from the government
Ministers plan to review the car safety checks and may also reform the system so a new car is first tested after four years instead of three.
This is despite warning from a Department for Transport report revealing that moving from three to four years would result in two more road traffic accident deaths per year.
It is expected that motorists faced with rising costs will welcome the move, which could significantly lower the cost of running a car.
Transport secretary Philip Hammond said: "Car technology has come a long way since the 1960s when our MOT regime was introduced.
"That's why we think it's right to look again to check whether we still have the right balance of MOT testing for modern vehicles."
Road safety campaigners, who recently welcomed the decision to turn speed cameras on again in Oxfordshire, will be among those consulted on the proposals.
