Coventry construction firm 'put employees at risk of accident at work'RSS Feed
A Coventry construction firm has been fined £6,000 after failing to do enough to prevent accident claims.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found a number of issues at Coventry Construction Ltd's Torrington Avenue premises, where an accident at work ten years ago resulted in a worker breaking every finger of one hand whilst operating a faulty radial arm drill.
Inspectors discovered inadequate guarding of drills and guillotines, poor control measures when spraying and storing flammable paint, and inadequate storage of oxygen and acetylene cylinders.
Despite advice being given to the company and it being issued with a prohibition notice for inadequate guarding of a radial arm drill, procedures were ignored.
HSE inspector Pamela Folsom said: "The company had hired consultants to advise them on health and safety matters but failed to heed the advice given them in relation to machinery guarding."
It follows a programme of inspections at construction sites across the UK carried out by the HSE, which revealed many building firms are not doing enough to prevent accidents at work.
