Oxfordshire traffic accident speed cameras switched on againRSS Feed
Speed cameras in Oxfordshire are being switched on again in a bid to reduce the number of accident claims on the county's roads.
Oxfordshire County Council controversially became one of the first local authorities in England to turn its cameras off as part of cost cutting measures.
Thames Valley Police said 72 fixed and 89 mobile cameras are being switched on in the county.
It follows concerns raised by road safety groups that turning the cameras off would lead to a rise in the traffic accident rate.
These worries appear to have borne out by figures from Thames Valley Police that show a slight increase in road traffic accident injuries.
Superintendent Rob Povey said: "We think this is important because we know that speed kills and speed is dangerous.
"We have shown in Oxfordshire that speed has increased through monitoring limits and we have noticed an increase in fatalities [and] the number of people seriously injured in 2010."
Meanwhile, police forces are on the brink of agreeing a deal that would allow speeders to escape points and a fine by taking a speed awareness course.
