Cheshire car parts firm fined for accident at workRSS Feed
A Cheshire car parts manufacturer has been fined £20,000 after an employee suffered a broken bone in an accident at work.
Andrew Burrell, 43, was working at Mitras Automotive's Winsford factory when a 31-tonne load from an overhead crane fell to the ground, shattering his thigh bone.
Two other workers escaped unharmed, but Mr Burrell was left needing a metal rod in his leg as a result of his injuries.
An investigation carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed the chains holding the crane were only designed to support 17 tonnes, while the crane itself could only lift 27 tonnes.
Commenting after the case, HSE inspector Martin Paren said it was "incredible" that no one was killed in the accident at work.
"Mitras regularly expected its workers to lift loads well over the lifting capacities of both the chains and the overhead crane. It was only a matter of time before something went wrong," he added.
It comes after Surya Foods was fined £9,000 for an accident in which an employee suffered a broken leg when he was hit by a forklift truck.
