Motorcycle accident ALARM bell soundedRSS Feed
The danger of having a motorcycle accident appears to be increasing, as Britain's roads show signs of deterioration in the last three years.
According to the latest annual local authority road maintenance (ALARM) survey, there was a 59 per cent increase in potholes in the last year.
It comes after chancellor George Osborne earmarked an extra £100 million in the Budget to fill potholes and reduce accident claims.
The survey from the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) warns that three years of harsh winters have impacted heavily on the state of Britain's roads.
It would take over £10 billion for councils to clear the maintenance backlog for roads.
But local authorities report an annual shortfall of £895 million in the highway maintenance budget they receive from central government.
AIA chairman Colin Loveday commented: "Local authorities are doing what they can, but reactive maintenance – such as simply filling potholes when they appear – is at least 20 times more expensive than planned preventative maintenance."
