Knowsley factory owner fined for accident at workRSS Feed
A factory owner in Knowsley has been fined after an accident at work in which an employee's hand was severed in a plastics mixing machine.
Forty-two-year-old Gary McKeown was emptying plastic granules from a hatch at the bottom of a blender when his hand became trapped in rotating parts and was cut off.
Although doctors reattached the hand, he lost his fingers and thumbs.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which brought the prosecution against Matrix Polymers, found that the locking mechanism on the machine had been broken for more than a year.
HSE investigating inspector Harry Baker said: "This was a devastating, life-changing injury for Mr McKeown who has been unable to return to work for almost two years now due to the trauma he endured."
It comes as the HSE reports 123 people died in accidents at work between April 1st and September 30th last year.
