Tailgating top traffic accident risk, say motoristsRSS Feed
The biggest traffic accident risk on motorways comes from motorists driving too close to the car in front, a new poll has found.
Eighty-five per cent of drivers cited tailgating as the most serious offence that leads to dangerous situations in the survey from breakdown firm GEM Motoring Assist.
Two-thirds of people think talking on a mobile phone while at the wheel and driving in the centre lane when the left hand lane could lead to accident claims.
More than half of those polled, however, would like to see the speed limit on motorways increased.
GEM Motoring Assist chief executive officer David Williams said drivers need to be more careful and motoring law "strictly enforced".
He added: "It is shocking that a large number of motorists are in favour of raising the motorway speed limit as research shows that this would considerably increase the number of casualties, levels of carbon emissions and fuel consumption."
It comes after a survey from Goodyear revealed drivers are risking accident claims through a lack of knowledge of the Highway Code.
