Small businesses 'need support' to implement health and safety lawRSS Feed
Small firms wanting to reduce accident claims may need some extra support to implement workplace health and safety law, it is claimed.
According to Neal Stone, director of policy and research at the British Safety Council, reducing accidents at work is good for business and companies need to be encouraged to realise this.
He notes that small businesses in particular can feel "weighed down" by workplace safety laws, but can be helped with "expert, simple and proportionate advice".
Mr Stone is convinced that paying attention to health and safety "is a boost for business", explaining: "It improves workforce motivation, reduces labour turnover and increases productivity."
His comments come as the government seeks to reform workplace safety laws, reducing the burden on businesses and cutting the number of inspections by a third.
Mr Stone said any changes to the current system need to be carefully considered and implications are understood so as not to undermine Britain's health and safety record.
