Businesses 'must take responsibility to reduce accident claims'RSS Feed
It is up to employers to reduce accident claims by ensuring health and safety consultants are suitable for their business or industry, a leading charity has advised.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) believes a new government database will not be a foolproof way to cut the accident at work rate among British firms.
It was announced earlier this week that the government was launching the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR), a database of highly-qualified health and safety experts.
"The government hopes the OSHCR will enable employers to identify competent advisers more easily," said Roger Bibbings, occupational safety adviser at RoSPA.
He explained, however, that many of these consultants do not have general, transferrable skills across various industries and are in fact highly specialised.
"Employers will still [need] to check to see that consultants who they shortlist from the register as part of their procurement are indeed suitable for the work that needs be done," Mr Bibbings added.
The register is part of a major shake-up of health and safety law the government hopes will reduce the burden on businesses.
