Accident claims 'may rise thanks to govt reforms'RSS Feed
Government plans to reform workplace health and safety reforms may lead to an increase in accident claims, a leading charity has indicated.
The British Safety Council said there could be more accidents at work after the employment minister Chris Grayling unveiled sweeping changes to health and safety laws.
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspections will be reduced by a third, with responsible employers exempt from compulsory visits.
The attention will instead be on "rogue" businesses and high risk locations.
Neal Stone, director of policy and research at the British Safety Council, said it will take time for the effects to be felt.
"The big worry is that an unintended consequence of these reforms could be to push up injury and ill health," he added.
Mr Grayling also said the government will review all aspects of the current laws with a view to scrapping elements it sees as unnecessary.
"If the government and HSE are able to deliver on this, there is going to be a much better, clearer focus on irresponsible employers who are breaking the law and currently getting away with it," Mr Stone noted.
