Roofing firm fined for accident claim riskRSS Feed
A roofing firm that put an employee at risk of suffering an accident at work has been fined.
The M & D Roof Coatings Ltd worker was spotted power washing the slopping roof of a property in Lymm, Chesire without any safety precautions in place to stop him falling to the ground.
M & D Roof Coatings was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and fined £10,000 at Halton Magistrates' Court in Runcorn.
After being informed of the unsafe working, the HSE immediately issued a prohibition notice ordering the work to stop until suitable safety equipment was in place.
HSE inspector John Ellis said: "Falls from height are among the biggest causes of workplace deaths in the UK. Roofing firms should therefore ensure that they have safe systems of work in place to protect their employees and others."
It comes as the HSE launches a nationwide crackdown on unsafe working practices in the construction industry to reduce the number of accident claims.
