Firm fined for amputation accident at workRSS Feed
An accident at work that led to the amputation of a worker's arm has resulted in a £60,000 fine for a Dutch waste recycling firm.
Thirty-five-year-old Daniel Ali was working as a process operator at Coolrec UK in Basildon in 2008 when his arm became caught in a conveyor belt.
He was trapped for around 45 minutes before emergency services could rescue him. Doctors were later forced to amputate his arm.
Parent company Coolrec Group BV was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The firm pleaded guilty to breaching safety regulations at Basildon Magistrates' Court.
HSE inspector Vicky Fletcher explained that the accident at work may not have happened if the conveyor belt had been properly guarded.
"This incident was completely avoidable and has left a man in the prime of his life without his right arm," she added.
It comes as the HSE launches a nationwide crackdown on construction sites in order to cut the number of accident claims in the industry.
