RoSPA: Assess environments for accident at work riskRSS Feed
All organisations should be finding ways to prevent an accident at work happening to their employees by assessing the environment for hazards and risks.
This is the advice from Roger Bibbings, occupational safety adviser at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
He suggests companies looking to avoid an accident claim from a worker should monitor near misses involving slips and trips, prevent spillages, implement good cleaning regimes and make sure there is good lighting.
If older people are at risk of slipping or falling, a hand rail is a good investment, Mr Bibbings noted.
"Consultation with workers and the public is a good idea; and of course, organisations should ensure that managers and employees are properly trained to carry out the tasks they are expected to undertake," he added.
His comments come after the National Patient Safety Agency revealed that between April 1st and September 30th 2010 there were 547,879 incidents in total, up four per cent on the previous six months.
