England traffic accident rate lowestRSS Feed
People in England are less likely to be making accident claims as it emerges that the country reports fewer serious incidents on its roads than any other country in the UK.
According to research from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), England tops the road safety league table ahead of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
In 2009, there were 3.6 traffic accident deaths in England per 100,000 people, which compares favourably with 4.2 for Scotland and Wales, and 6.4 for Northern Ireland.
Within England, the north-east and the north-west are the safest places to drive, the figures indicate.
"Bringing the worst areas in the UK up to the same level of the best would save many more lives and reduce serious injuries," remarked IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig.
"This should be a prime focus for central, devolved and local government road safety plans."
Although Scotland suffered more per capita road deaths than England, 2009 saw the lowest number of people killed north of the Border in 60 years.
