North-east firm fined for accident at workRSS Feed
A Tyneside building firm has been fined for contributing to an accident at work in which an employee suffered serious injuries.
Ian Allan Building Contractors Ltd was prosecuted following the incident in 2009 when a worker fell more than four metres when the scaffolding he was operating on became dislodged.
Fifty-four-year-old Kevin Clark suffered crushed vertebrae in his spine as well as a broken bone in his left foot. He was hospitalised for two weeks after the accident at work.
"I've had steel rods put in my spine, I'm in constant pain and it restricts my movement and makes walking really difficult. I'll probably never be able to do the job I did again," Mr Clark said.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the firm had failed to control alterations to the scaffolding, failed to conduct inspections of the scaffold at least every seven days, failed to identify and correct unsafe alterations and allowed workers to use unsafe scaffolding.
Meanwhile, Konecranes UK Ltd has been prosecuted by the HSE after workers in Newcastle narrowly avoided being struck by a 15-metre steel girder weighing nearly four tons.
