Toilet tissue firm fined for accident at workRSS Feed
An accident at work that caused broken bones and permanent damage to an employee's hand has resulted in a £10,000 fine for the company responsible.
Neath-based Intertissue Ltd was prosecuted after 43-year-old Phillip Evans from Maestag had three fingers crushed in a machine used to layer tissue paper.
According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which brought the prosecution, the company failed to take effective measures to prevent access to a dangerous part of machinery.
HSE inspector Stuart Charles said the accident at work was "entirely preventable", adding that simple safety precautions would have been sufficient to avoid the incident.
"Intertissue Ltd failed in its duty to ensure workers were able to operate machinery safely in their day-to-day roles," he added.
"This is a well known hazard throughout the industry and had suitable measures been in place this incident would not have happened."
It comes after a national crackdown on construction sites by the HSE in order to improve safety and reduce accident claims.
